About eKey

What is eKey?

This innovative feature ensures simplicity, security, and convenience, streamlining the use of services and enhancing the user’s digital experience.

Currently, eKey is offered in two versions: the revamped eKey 2.0, and the current eKey.

The Revamped eKey 2.0

The Current eKey

eKey Levels:

  • Standard eKey
  • The Standard eKey requires only a personal number and password for eService access. It can be created online and used instantly to access all eServices that do not require a fingerprint verification. Users can upgrade to Advanced eKey anytime by visiting an eGovernment eService Center or using the eKiosks.

  • Advanced eKey
  • Registering for the Advanced eKey grants access to all eServices, including those requiring enhanced confidentiality through ID card and biometric (fingerprint) verification.

To complete the registration, users must visit one of the Kiosks or any eService center once to register the fingerprint verification and their Identity Card.

How we started

The eKey is the Kingdom of Bahrain’s national authentication system, enabling citizens and residents to effortlessly register and verify their identity for unified, secure access to a wide range of government and private sector services. This innovative system was rolled out in two strategic phases, reflecting Bahrain's commitment to enhancing digital efficiency and user experience.

Development of the eKey System: Early Phases

The eKey system was launched in the Kingdom of Bahrain on April 5, 2012, offering a secure and efficient authentication platform with two levels of access:

  • Basic Level:Users can register online.
  • Advanced Level:Citizens, residents and GCC citizens were able to register by visiting one of the Information & eGovernment Authority’s service centers or Kiosks to complete the fingerprint verification or validation. Initially, the eKey was available exclusively to citizens, providing access to 13 government eServices.

Launch of the Revamped eKey 2.0

The Information & eGovernment Authority (iGA) introduced an enhanced eKey system, the revamped eKey 2.0 application. This platform offers users a seamless and secure authentication solution. With the eKey 2.0 app, citizens and residents can now access public and private sector services through a single, biometric-enabled platform, eliminating the need for physical visits. This enhanced system represents a significant milestone in Bahrain’s ongoing commitment to digital transformation, delivering innovative, user-centric solutions that prioritize convenience, security, and efficiency. eKey 2.0 underscores Bahrain's dedication to empowering users with cutting-edge technology while streamlining access to essential services.
